What self care looks like for me

What self care looks like for me. Well, right now, self care looks like allowing things like social media to take a back seat in favor of celebrating family time, me time and time to get the back end tasks of living all caught up. Taking real breaks can be hard when you’re self employed (and when you’re not). Being a photographer and having my photo studio, Richmond Boudoir, means my brain is on 24/7. Taking intentional time off of social media has been so refreshing. It’s allowed me to seriously slow down. I’m starting to feel like myself again. My stress level is way lower too. I will now highly recommend taking regular social breaks. Your heart and mind will thank you.

Self care also looks like tending my morning routine. I know that sounds boring but honestly my morning sets the tone for my entire day. If I take time out to go to the gym (or go for a walk), eat breakfast, make my bed, enjoy a cup of coffee, meditate and journal my whole day feels limitless. I’m more productive. I’m happier in general. It feels really good to set a positive tone for my day.

Reaching out for help can be an absolute life jacket.

Another self care practice I am revisiting this month is getting therapy. It’s been such a relief to reconnect with a trained professional. We come up against obstacles in life that sometimes we simply don’t have the tools to process on our own. Reaching out for help can be an absolute life jacket. Additionally let’s admit that the past 2 years have been a rollercoaster of stress for us all. I’m sure we can all use a check up in the mental health department. Hell even reading a good self help book can make a positive difference.

Additionally what self care looks like for me is having hobbies. For so long I’ve backburnered hobbies. “I don’t have the time” has been my go to mantra for neglecting my interests. Spending just a little bit of time each day on an activity I love to do grounds me. Immediately I feel more peaceful and centered. Feeling genuinely connected to myself is a huge benefit of practicing my hobbies. BTW some of mine are working with pastels, gardening, hiking, reading and making bread. I’ve recently been toying with different gym activities but I’ve yet to find one that’s hit “hobby” status. We’ll see!

What all of this seems to be signaling to me is that although yes a good hot salt bath by candle light is totally amazing, it’s not the only way to go about self care. Sometimes carving out intentional blocks of time to live distraction free is tremendously freeing.
